The best and worst used cars Cars are getting more reliable every year. However, buying a used vehicle entails some risk. A great way to reduce the uncertainty in buying a used car is to limit your shopping list to cars with proven reliability. The list on these pages can guide you to the best and help you steer clear of the worst. Consumer Reports gathers this information with an extensive annual survey of its more than 5 million magazine and online subscribers. They're asked to list any serious problems they've had with their vehicles in a variety of different areas during the past 12 months. The 2003 survey garnered about 675,000 responses, which allows CR to publish the most comprehensive reliability information available. The results paint a detailed picture of how 1996 through 2003 vehicles are holding up. We look at the overall reliability and separate the models into lists that highlight the best and worst. The CR Good Bets are the best of the best; they have performed well in our road tests and have been consistently better than average in overall reliability. The complete list of Reliable Used Cars (available to subscribers) gives you the big picture. It includes all the models that have had above-average reliability, according to our 2003 survey, and divides models by price category, make, and model year. Used Cars to Avoid (available to subscribers) shows you all models, by manufacturer and year, that have had below-average reliability, according to our 2003 survey. Repeat Offenders are vehicles that are especially risky buys. They have exhibited several years of poor overall reliability.

CR Good Bets These models represent the best of both worlds: They have performed well in Consumer Reports tests over the years and have had much-better-than-average reliability for multiple years. They are listed alphabetically.

About these lists The lists in this report are distilled from reliability data on 1996 through 2003 models. CR Good Bets and Repeat Offenders include only models for which we have sufficient data for at least three model years. Models that were new in 2002 or 2003 do not appear. Problems with the engine, cooling system, transmission, and drive system were weighted more heavily than other problems. 2WD, 4WD, and AWD stand for two-, four-and all-wheel drive, respectively.
